Covered in thick forests, this former Hindu Princely state remains predominantly tribal. The capital of Tripura-Agartala- houses the magical Ujjiayanta Palace built by the ruling king in 1910, now home to the state Legislature. The late nineteenth-century Jagannath Temple, across a lake in front of the palace has a four-strayed Shikhara (temple tower), painted a striking orange. Excursions from Agartala include Sipahojala, a beautiful botanical garden with a small Zoo, Neermahal, a water palace built in 1930 in the middle of Lake Rudrasagar.
