The first concerted effort to protect this rich but rapidly depleting wildlife and habitat was made in 1972, when the Government of India passed a Wildlife Act, followed by the launch of project Tiger. Simultaneously, over the years, India has set up around eighty national parks and 440 wildlife sanctuaries. Here's the pick of the lot, but remember, it's but a taste of what this incredible country has to offer. Most parks and sanctuaries are open from October to March each year.
