INDIAN FAIRS AND FESTIVALS IN AUGUST
Janamashtami (celebrated all over India): The birth of Lord Krishna at midnight, is celebrated with great fervor especially in Brindavan and Mathura. In Maharashtra, earthen pots of curd and butter are hung up, high over the streets. Human pyramids from to reach and break them, re-enacting Krishna's childhood pranks.
Independence Day (National holiday): 15 August 1947, the day India gained independence, is commemorated as a National holiday. The Prime Minister unfurls the national flag on the ramparts of the Red Fort, at New Delhi.
Onam (Kerala): The most important festival of the state heralds the harvest season and honours the ancient King Mahabali.
Nehru Trophy Boat Race (Alappuzha, Kerala): Long elegant snake boats with crews of over a 100 men, makes this a dramatic annual event.
