Chini Ka Rauza Agra
The Chini ka Rauza (China Tomb) is believed to be the tomb which was built for himself by Alami Afzal Khan Shirazi. Alami Afzal Khan Shirazi was a cultured Persian. He became became Shah Jahan's chief minister and died at Lahore in 1639.
Now rather dilapidated, the Chini Ka Rauza, Persian-style mausoleum is still worth visiting. It was then the only building in India to be completely covered in tiles, fragments of which still survive. The glazed, Chinese-style tiles (chini-mitti) have given the domed building its name- the Chini Ka Rauza. The tiles are predominantly blue and white, with turquoise, orange and yellow variations. These coloured tiles were set in plaster on a brick base in the manner of a large-scale mosaic.
The designs illustrate flowers in a stylized form. It is on the north side that the most extensive sections remain. An enormous iwan gives entry to the interior where there is little to see. It is thought that both tombs were originally faced with marble but only brickwork survives.
